Our clinic is one of the few centers in Central Florida offering both arterial and venous expertise under one roof, combining medical precision with minimally invasive comfort.
What Causes Vein Disease?
Healthy veins carry blood back to the heart using one-way valves and the calf-muscle pump. When those valves weaken or veins become compressed, blood pools in the legs — raising pressure (venous hypertension) and causing:
- Stretching of vein walls and backward flow (reflux)
- Inflammation, swelling, skin changes, and leg heaviness
- In advanced cases, painful ulcers or open wounds
Some patients develop iliac vein compression (May-Thurner syndrome), where a major pelvic vein is squeezed by an artery. This hidden condition can cause chronic one-sided leg swelling, pelvic pain, or varicose veins high on the thigh or groin. If untreated, it can lead to DVT or long-term venous damage.
Common risk factors include previous clots, prolonged standing or sitting, obesity, pregnancy, aging, and family history.
Signs & Symptoms of Venous Disease
- Heavy, achy, or throbbing legs after activity
- Swelling of feet or ankles (often worse at day’s end)
- Bulging varicose veins or clusters of spider veins
- Itchy, darkened, or thickened lower-leg skin
- Non-healing wounds near the ankles
- Restless legs, cramping, or numbness
- For May-Thurner syndrome: one-sided swelling, pelvic fullness, groin varicosities
Ignoring these signs can allow symptoms to worsen and increase your risk for clotting or skin breakdown.
How We Diagnose Vein Problems
At Heart Vein & Vascular Clinic, we use the latest non-invasive technology to find the root cause of your vein disease:
- Comprehensive Evaluation: history, physical exam, and discussion of lifestyle or risk factors.
- Venous Duplex Ultrasound / Mapping: painless imaging that measures blood-flow, valve function, reflux, and obstruction.
- Pelvic & Iliac Vein Imaging: advanced Doppler ultrasound, CT, or IVUS when symptoms suggest iliac vein compression (May-Thurner syndrome).
- Lymphedema Assessment for combined swelling or lymphatic involvement.
- Personalized Treatment Plan: Dr. Vakili explains all options and recommends the safest, most effective path forward.
